WCPS Changes Activity Schedules Because of Solar Eclipse

Hagerstown, MD (August 17, 2017) - All outside activities for students of Washington County Public Schools from noon - 4 p.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017 will be held indoors or postponed. The change in schedules for athletic coaches, band directors and coordinators of other activities is being made out of an abundance of caution during the solar eclipse. Summer school will dismiss at normal times.

New Dates and Times for Washington County Board of Education Meetings

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 17, 2017) – The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) has adjusted its meeting schedule for September to accommodate the opening of schools on September 5. The next BOE meeting is scheduled for September 12 at 6 p.m. at the Center for Education Services, 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. The following meeting is scheduled for September 26 at the same location. Additionally, all BOE business meetings will start at 6 p.m. going forward, which eliminates the 1 p.m. meetings that were typically held once each month.

BOE Seeks Public Comment on Policies Regarding Public/Private Partnerships and Pregnant and Parenting Students

The Washington County Board of Education (BOE), at its August 15, 2017 business meeting, approved the first reading of two policies:

  • proposed Policy JEA, “Pregnant and Parents Students Attendance Policy;”
  • proposed Policy KC, “Public-Private Educational Partnerships - Construction Activity”

Jathan Mentzer Receives National Trig-Star 2nd Place Honors

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 9, 2017) – Williamsport High School senior Jathan Mentzer has been recognized by the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) for earning second place honors in the 2017 Richard E. Lomax National Trig-Star Awards program. Jathan was one of 35 state level winners to advance to the national competition. A Trig-Star committee of NSPS evaluated the national examinations submitted by the state winners to determine the top three finishers.

Public Invited to Safely View Solar Eclipse at CES

HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 25, 2017) – The public is invited to join the staff of the William Brish Planetarium and members of the Tri-State Astronomers for a public viewing event from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Center for Education Services (CES), 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. That day’s solar eclipse can be viewed through solar protected telescopes and free solar glasses, which will be available while the supply lasts. The event will be held in an area in front of the public entrance to the CES.

BOE Seeks Additional Public Comment on Proposed Fundraising Policies

Hagerstown, MD (June 22, 2017) - The Washington County Board of Education (BOE), at its June 20, 2017 business meeting, approved the first reading to rescind existing policies on school fundraising and the first reading of three separate policies that would regulate school fundraising. Policies IGDF and JLA would be rescinded and in their place, policies JJE, KB and KBA have been proposed:

Technology and Resources Available to All Students in Summer Learning Program

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 14, 2017) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is encouraging and supporting learning by all students over the summer break with the Pre-K-Grade 12 Summer Learning Program. Students and families will have access to iPads and a library of books, magazines and curriculum resources. Along with access to WCPS resources, students will be able to access materials from the Washington County Free Library system.
