Media Specialist and Spanish Teacher Honored
Hagerstown, MD (January 13, 2017) - Two Washington County Public Schools educators have recently received honors for work in their fields. Amber Sheffler, Spanish teacher at South Hagerstown High School, had been named 2016 Maryland State Language Teacher of the Year and is now a finalist for similar honors at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (NECTFL). She is one of five finalists in the multi-state region and will learn who receives top honors at the group’s conference next month.
Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity Members Announced; First Meeting Scheduled

First Read Approved: BOE Seeking Comment on Proposed Changes to Its Policy on Bullying, Harassment or Intimidation
Hagerstown, MD (December 14, 2016) - Based on the work of the Board of Education’s (BOE) Policy Review and Development Committee, the BOE approved a first read of Policy JFH, entitled “Policy Prohibiting Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation.” during its December 13, 2016 business meeting. The BOE is providing an additional opportunity for public comment through the close of business on December 30, 2016.
Coin Wars Continues at Western Heights Middle, Benefiting Johns Hopkins Children's Center
Hagerstown, MD (December 12, 2016) - The Student Government Association at Western Heights Middle School has again coordinated Coin Wars to raise money for Johns Hopkins Children's Center. Each grade level is competing to generate the most points and the points are scored in a unique way. The grade levels receive points for collecting pennies and dollars, but have points subtracted from their totals if silver coins are placed in their collection jars.
WCPS to Salute Employees at Celebration of Service on November 16 at Washington County Museum of Fine Arts
Hagerstown, MD (November 11, 2016) - Washington County Public Schools will recognize employees at the annual Celebration of Service on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. The reception honors WCPS employees who have reached five years of employment and years of service in five year increments. A total of 563 employees have been invited because they reached a landmark year of service this year. Lawrence Myers will be recognized for 45 years of service and another five individuals for 40 years.
BOE Seeking Diversity Committee Members; Applications Accepted Through November 28
HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 4, 2016) – The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) is beginning the process of finding members for the newly created ad hoc Committee On Diversity. The BOE approved the establishment of the committee at its October 18, 2016 business meeting. The committee’s charge is to propose new initiatives or expand existing programs that promote respect for all cultures and diversity throughout Washington County.
Estate Planning Workshop for Parents of Students with Special Needs
Hagerstown, MD (November 2, 2016) - Parents of children with special needs are invited to a workshop focusing on estate planning and letters of intent at Funkstown Elementary School on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 6 - 9 p.m. Attorney Michael Day will present information about special needs trusts and the importance of power of attorney versus guardianship and advance directives.

BOE Approves School Calendars for Next Two Years
Hagerstown, MD (October 18, 2016) - The Washington County Board of Education unanimously approved the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 School Calendars at its business meeting tonight.
