State Career and Technology Education Awards for WCPS

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 4, 2018) – The 2018 Maryland Career and Technology Education (CTE) Awards of Excellence program, sponsored by the Division of Career and College Readiness, will feature recognition for Washington County Technical High School’s Homeland Security Program and Dr. Peggy Pugh, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Washington County Public Schools. The Homeland Security Program was chosen as Outstanding CTE Program/Secondary and Dr. Pugh will be recognized for Innovations in CTE.

Williamsport High's Christopher Mackley Elected New Student Member of BOE

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 29, 2018) – Christopher Mackley, a sophomore at Williamsport High School, was recently elected as the student member to the Washington County Board of Education (BOE). Chris was selected from a field of five finalists by representatives of the Washington County Student Government Association and will succeed Ibrahim Diallo in July.

Chris is in the STEM program and currently serving as co-vice president of Williamsport High’s Student Government Association. He is also involved in cross-country, track and the National Spanish Honor Society.

2018-2019 Teacher of the Year Finalists Announced

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 28, 2018) – The five finalists for Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year have been selected. One educator will be chosen to succeed Teacher of the Year Carolyn Holcomb from Western Heights Middle School and will be announced at the annual dinner and recognition at Fountain Head Country Club on April 25, 2018. The winner represents Washington County in the State Teacher of the Year program. The county program is a partnership with the Hagerstown/Washington County Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

WCPS Youth Apprenticeship Program Open House on April 12

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 23, 2018) – Members of the Washington County business community are invited to the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Youth Apprenticeship Program Open House on Thursday, April 12, 2018 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the Center for Education Services, 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. More than a dozen local businesses are already partners in the program with WCPS. The keynote speaker for the open house is Kelly Schulz, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

Superintendent Listening Sessions Scheduled

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 14, 2018) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) will present three opportunities for parent and community engagement at “Listening Sessions” with Dr. Boyd Michael, superintendent of schools. Parents, students, WCPS staff and community members are welcome to attend the public sessions and are encouraged to come prepared with questions and ideas. Each session starts at 6:30 p.m. and will include a question and answer segment with Dr. Michael and staff.

Smithsburg High Students On the Job Through Youth Apprenticeship Maryland

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 28, 2018) – Two juniors from Smithsburg High School became apprentices through the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Youth Apprenticeship Maryland Program in January. Each student will complete 450 hours of mentored on-the-job instruction at a participating employer. 

Sam Pietrzak and Gregory Spear are both shop assistants at Bikle Manufacturing. Bikle Manufacturing in Smithsburg is a machining business providing machine tool rebuilding and other custom fabrication services.

Maple Sugar Festival on March 3 at Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 26, 2018) – Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview will host the annual Maple Sugar Festival on Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day’s events include a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Clear Spring FFA/FFA Alumni from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Fairview dining hall. North High Students Present at Regional Environmental Literacy Forum

Hagerstown, MD (February 16, 2018) - Caroline Fleetwood and Maria Cardenas from North Hagerstown High School were guest presenters at the Regional Environmental Literacy Forum at the National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV. The two students, who had previously taken Jen Aydelotte's AP environmental science class, spoke to a group of more than 100 adults from local, state and federal agencies involved in environmental education across the mid-Atlantic region.
