Clear Spring High School Senior Receives President's Volunteer Service Award

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 27, 2017) – Bethany Doppel of Clear Spring High School has been honored for exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. Nominated for the award by her school, Bethany has volunteered at STAR Equestrian Center, accumulating over 1,700 hours of service. Her volunteer experiences have developed her interest in pursuing a career in Equine Facilitated Therapeutics.

Public Hearing on Draft Budget on February 28

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 24, 2017) – Citizens will have the opportunity to comment on the Fiscal Year 2018 Draft General Fund Budget at a public hearing on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 6 p.m. The draft of the spending plan was approved by the Washington County Board of Education (BOE) at its February 21 business meeting. The hearing will be held at the Center for Education Services (CES), 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown.

Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School Hosting Maple Sugar Festival on March 4

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 22, 2017) – The annual Maple Sugar Festival at Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The day’s events include a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Clear Spring FFA/FFA Alumni from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Fairview dining hall. Dr. Boyd Michael Chosen as Superintendent

Hagerstown, MD (February 7, 2017) - The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) today unanimously approved Dr. Boyd Michael as the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Interim Superintendent effective March 14, 2017 through June 30, 2017, filling a vacancy that will be created by the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Clayton Wilcox. Immediately following that action, the BOE announced its intent to officially appoint Dr. Michael as Superintendent of WCPS effective July 1, 2017, pending approval by the Maryland State Superintendent and the negotiation of a contract.

February Clothing Drive for Children In Need

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 1, 2017) – The 10th annual clothing drive to benefit Children In Need continues in  Washington County Public Schools from February 6 – 17, 2017. Students, parents, staff and the community are encouraged to donate gently used clothing that Children In Need distributes to children eligible for the Free and Reduced Meals program. Toiletries, books and school supplies are also accepted. The schools and programs participating in the February 2017 collection are:

Special Permission Application Period Open through May 1 for 2017-2018

Hagerstown, MD (February 1, 2017) - Special Permission applications for the 2017-2018 school year will be accepted by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) through May 1, 2017. Under Board of Education Regulation JC-R, a student may be approved to attend a school outside his or her attendance area if the request meets specific criteria and there is available student capacity at the requested school.

8th Grade Day on the Job

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 30, 2017) – Eighth grade students have an opportunity to participate in the annual Day on the Job on Thursday, February 2, 2017. Participating students will spend the day shadowing a parent, family member or other business person in a workplace.

WCPS Graduation Rate Over 91%

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 24, 2017) – In new Maryland State Department of Education data released today, Washington County Public Schools’ (WCPS) four-year cohort graduation rate stood at 91.06 percent in 2016. It represents a one tenth of one percent decrease from the previous year, but is well above another record-setting year statewide. The statewide rate was 87.61 percent in 2016, up from 86.98 percent. The cohort graduation rate represents a group of students from freshman year through their senior year.

Legion Auxiliary Donates Coats and Hats to Students in Need

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 20, 2017) – The ladies auxiliary of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 in Hagerstown is donating winter jackets to students of Washington County Public Schools. Auxiliary members also made winter hats that are being given to students in need across the county. The partnership has been coordinated by Brian Getz, health education and life skills teacher at Smithsburg High School.
