HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 27, 2017) – Barbara Ingram School for the Arts (BISFA) jumped into the top ten of Maryland schools in the 2017 U.S. News & World Report list of the nation’s best high schools. BISFA was ranked 9th in Maryland and 349 nationally, compared to 15th and 406 last year. The ranking earns the school Gold Medal status, one of only 12 schools in the state to be so honored.

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 25, 2017) – Students in Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) who have earned twice the required number of student service learning hours or more for graduation will be honored at North Hagerstown High School on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 7 p.m. Students must complete 75 hours of service-learning to graduate and Bethany Doppel of Clear Spring High School earned the highest number of hours in the senior class: 1,758. Her volunteer work has been done at Star Equestrian.

Hagerstown, MD (April 19, 2017) - Based on the work of the Board of Education’s (BOE) Policy Review and Development Committee, the BOE approved a first read of Policy ADF, entitled “Wellness: Physical and Nutritional Health,” during its April 18, 2017 business meeting. The BOE is providing an additional opportunity for public comment through the close of business on April 28, 2017.

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 19, 2017) – The final collection in the 10th annual clothing drive to benefit Children In Need is scheduled in Washington County Public Schools from April 24 – May 5, 2017. Students, parents, staff and the community are encouraged to donate gently used clothing that Children In Need distributes to children eligible for the Free and Reduced Meals program. HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 10, 2017) – The schedule of graduation ceremonies for the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Class of 2017 has been finalized. Each of the graduations will be held in the evening except for Marshall Street School/Washington County Job Development Program, which will be held on Thursday, May 25 at 10 a.m. at Hagerstown Community College’s Kepler Theater. South Hagerstown High School’s graduation will be held at Hager Hall Conference & Event Center, 901 Dual Highway, Hagerstown.

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 30, 2017) – Three community listening sessions have been scheduled as a way for interim Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) superintendent Dr. Boyd Michael to introduce himself to parents and community members and discuss school system initiatives and priorities. The sessions will allow parents, students, WCPS staff and members of the community to offer ideas, express concerns and ask questions about the school system.

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 20, 2017) – Williamsport High School junior Austin Swiger was awarded first place in the 2017 Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Aspiring Entrepreneurs Competition. The event was a cooperative presentation by WCPS and the Hagerstown-Washington County Chamber of Commerce. Mark Harrell of CNB Bank, Greg Mills from High Rock Holdings and Penny Pittman from Blue Goose Market and Bakery served as judges for finalists’ presentations at Leitersburg Cinemas.

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 17, 2017) – Five finalists have been selected in in the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year program. One educator will be chosen to succeed Teacher of the Year Kyle Dingle of Maugansville Elementary School and will be announced at the annual dinner and recognition at Fountain Head Country Club on April 26, 2017. The winner represents Washington County in the State Teacher of the Year program. The county program is a partnership with the Hagerstown/Washington County Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 15, 2017) – For the second consecutive year, 13 students from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) are being recognized in the National Carson Scholars program. For 2017, three students are honored for the first time and the remaining ten students are being recognized for maintaining their Carson Scholar status through excellent performance in the classroom and commitment to their communities. The national program annually recognizes students from grades four through 11 for outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities.
