Clear Spring High Named Maryland Green School

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 15, 2019) – Clear Spring High School joins the list of Maryland Green Schools. The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education announced its latest recipients, expanding the total number of Maryland Green Schools to 636, including eight in Washington County. The program encourages educational opportunities for schools that increase awareness and understanding of environmental relationships that impact public health and the local community.

Both 24 Game Winners from Williamsport Elementary

Hagerstown, MD (May 9, 2019) - 5th grader Jeremiah Acquah and 4th grader Hayden Evans made it a clean sweep of the 24 Game championships for  Williamsport Elementary School at the 28th annual math challenge on May 1 at Hagerstown Community College(HCC). Approximately 200 students from grades four and five participated in this year’s 24 Game competition, representing 24 Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) elementary schools. In the competition, students combine four numbers using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to equal a total of 24.

Top Students to Be Recognized at 2019 Celebration of Excellence on May 8

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 7, 2019) – Washington County Public Schools presents the 2019 Celebration of Excellence at North Hagerstown High School on Wednesday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. A dessert reception for the students and their guests will precede the program at 6:30 p.m. Students who have achieved a 3.7 grade point average (GPA) or higher through the first semester of their senior year will be recognized. A total of 349 students will be recognized and of those, 181 have earned a GPA of 4.0 or higher. The following students will be recognized:

Williamsport High School Navy Enlistee Scores High on Defense Language Test

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 3, 2019) – Williamsport High School senior Michael Booker, who has enlisted in the U.S. Navy, has earned the highest qualification possible because of his score on the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB). The DLAB measures an individual’s ability to learn a foreign language and decode messages. Mr. Booker’s score was 110, which qualified him for Level IV Languages. He is now qualified to learn any language the Navy needs, including German, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Korean and Pashto.

BOE Schedules Vote on Proposed Changes to Sharpsburg Elementary Attendance Zone

Hagerstown, MD (April 29, 2019) - The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) is scheduled to vote on a set of recommendations for the realignment of the Sharpsburg Elementary attendance zone during the business meeting on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Center for Education Services (CES) at 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown.

Public Hearing on Proposed Attendance Zone Realignment for New Sharpsburg Elementary on April 16 at Boonsboro Middle

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 28, 2019) – A public hearing for discussion of proposed changes to the attendance zone for the new Sharpsburg Elementary School under construction will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at 6 p.m. at Boonsboro Middle School. The proposed realignment was created during months of consideration and analysis by the Facilities and Enrollment Advisory Committee (FEAC) and presented by superintendent of schools, Dr. Boyd Michael, to the Washington County Board of Education (BOE) on March 19, 2019.

Students Receive High Marks from Judges at Trilogy Fine Arts Competition

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 28, 2019) – The opening night exhibition of high school student art at the 2019 Trilogy Fine Arts Competition on Tuesday, March 26 at Hager Hall Conference & Event Center in Hagerstown was highlighted by the announcement of first place winners in each of seven categories and overall best in show. A panel of judges had narrowed 185 entries to five finalists in each of the categories: drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, digital media, ceramics and sculpture.

WCPS Launches Online Tutorials for Family-Assisted Learning

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 20, 2019) – Online tutorials are now available for middle and high school students of Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) when they are away from the classroom. These resources from Apex Learning in Math and English Language Arts can provide help on homework, offer extra practice on topics where a student may be struggling, facilitate accelerated learning to get ahead in certain subject areas and prepare for standardized tests or college entrance exams.

2019-2020 WCPS Teacher of the Year Finalists

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 15, 2019) – The five finalists for Washington County Public Schools’ (WCPS) 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year learned of their honor during visits by superintendent of schools Dr. Boyd Michael and other WCPS staff. One educator will be chosen to succeed 2018 Teacher of the Year, Jeanine Horst from Cascade Elementary School, and will be announced at the annual dinner and recognition at Fountain Head Country Club on April 24, 2019. The winner represents Washington County in the State Teacher of the Year program.

High School English Learner Students Explore Career Opportunities During Visit to Hagerstown Community College

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 12, 2019) – Sixty English learner students from Clear Spring, North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown, Washington County Technical and Williamsport high schools visited Hagerstown Community College (HCC) last week to learn more about higher education and career opportunities available to them after graduation. The showcase of career pathways for English learners is an annual partnership between Washington County Public Schools and HCC.
