BOE Approves Changes to Student Cell Phone Use Policy

HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 16, 2019) - The Washington County Board of Education (WCBOE) approved revisions to Policy JICJ, “Use of Personally-Owned, Electronic Devices” at the July 16, 2019 business meeting. The policy outlines the appropriate times and circumstances under which students can use their personal technology devices such as cell phones, tablets, computers, etc. in school and during the school day.

Transportation Department Asking Parents to Submit Transportation Location Change (TLC) Forms

HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 11, 2019) – The Transportation Department of Washington County Public Schools is asking parents and guardians to submit Transportation Location Change (TLC) forms in a timely manner this summer. If a student requires transportation to or from a location other than the bus stop assigned to the home address, a TLC form must be submitted to the Transportation Department. If forms are not submitted by August 16, 2019, the request may not be approved prior to September 3, the first day of school.

Summer 2019 Meal Program

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 14, 2019) – The Food and Nutrition Services department of Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is making available its annual summer meal program, providing free meals for anyone 18 years of age and younger Monday through Friday from June 17 through August 23. Department staff will operate six Meal Machine vehicles at the following times and locations:

WCPS Summer Hours for Schools and Offices

HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 12, 2019) – As an energy and cost-saving measure, a four-day work week for Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) will begin on Monday, June 17, 2019. Schools and offices will be open expanded hours Monday through Thursday and closed each Friday through the week of August 12. Regular hours will resume on Monday, August 19; however, schools and offices will also be closed on Friday, August 23.

Next Two School Year Calendars Approved by BOE

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 30, 2019) – The calendars for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years have been approved by the Washington County Board of Education (BOE). The BOE’s Calendar Committee, comprised of school administrators, teachers and support personnel, along with members of the community, create drafts of proposed calendars for the BOE to consider. Next school year will begin on September 3, 2019. The first day of school for students in the 2020-2021 school year will be Monday, August 31, 2020.

BOE Recognizes 2019 Maryland Seal of Biliteracy Recipients

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 21, 2019) – The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) recognized a group of 44 seniors from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) who had earned the 2019 Maryland Seal of Biliteracy. A dessert reception for the students and their guests preceded the recognition at tonight’s BOE business meeting. The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy is a state award that recognizes a student’s high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages other than English.

South Hagerstown High Hosts 2nd Annual International Night on May 23

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 21, 2019) – South Hagerstown High School is hosting its 2nd Annual International Night on Thursday, May 23, 2019 from 6 – 8 p.m. The event highlights the diversity in the community in many fun and informational ways. South High students have created displays representing 35 countries; visitors can stop at the displays, and with a correct answer to a question, can earn a food ticket and a stamp in a passport that will be available upon entry to the event.

Notice Reminder: BOE to Vote on May 21 on Proposed Changes to Sharpsburg Elementary Attendance Zone

Hagerstown, MD (May 20, 2019) - The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) is scheduled to vote on a set of recommendations for the realignment of the Sharpsburg Elementary attendance zone during the business meeting on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Center for Education Services (CES) at 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown.
