BISFA's Caleb Auldridge Selected for National Honor Ensemble
HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 31, 2019) – Vocal music major Caleb Auldridge from Barbara Ingram School for the Arts (BISFA) has been chosen for the National Association for Music Education 2019 All-National Honor Ensembles. Caleb’s audition earned him selection from thousands of students nationwide and he will be one of only six vocalists representing the state of Maryland. Rehearsals and performances will be held November 7 – 10, 2019 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.
Superintendent Listening Sessions Announced
HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 16, 2019) – A series of “Listening Sessions” with Dr. Boyd Michael, superintendent of schools, will be presented by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) from October through February. The sessions are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on the following dates:
43rd Annual Showcase of Marching Bands on October 15 at South High
HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 10, 2019) – The Shepherd University Ram Band will perform as a special guest at the 43rd Annual Showcase of Marching Bands, presented by Washington County Public Schools on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at 7 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School. The Williamsport High School “Blue” Band will serve as host band and will be joined by the marching bands from Boonsboro, Clear Spring, North Hagerstown, Smithsburg and South Hagerstown high schools.
Apex Learning Tutorials Available to Middle and High School Students
Hagerstown, MD (October 7, 2019) - Middle and high school students can utilize Apex Learning Tutorials for English, math and college readiness (SAT, ACT and ACCUPLACER) courses. The resources can provide homework help, extra practice on topics where a student may be struggling, facilitate accelerated learning to get ahead in certain courses and prepare for standardized tests or college entrance exams.
BOE Seeking Public Comment on Proposed Policies on Elementary Grading System and on Grade Change Requirements and Appeals
Hagerstown, MD (September 18, 2019) - The Washington County Board of Education (BOE), at its September 17, 2019 business meeting, approved the first reading of proposed Policy IKAB, entitled, "Grading System for Elementary Schools" and Policy IKC, entitled, "Grade Change Requirements and Appeals."
All-County Open House for Academy, Advanced, CTE and Magnet Programs for All Students
Hagerstown, MD (September 12, 2019) - Students from all grade levels and their families will have opportunities to learn about Academy, Advanced, Career Technology Education (CTE) and Magnet programs available in Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) at the annual open house on Monday, September 23, 2019 at South Hagerstown High School. Elementary and middle school programs will be showcased between 5:30 and 7 p.m. Information and exhibits will be available from 5:30 - 6:00 on early child development, magnet programs and enrichment opportunities.
BOE Seeking Public Comment on Proposed Changes to Policies on Bullying, Harassment or Intimidation and on Threat Assessment
Hagerstown, MD (September 4, 2019) - The Washington County Board of Education (BOE), at its September 3, 2019 business meeting, approved the first reading of proposed changes to Policy JFH, entitled "Policy Prohibiting Bullying, Harassment or Intimidation," and Policy JLD, entitled, "School Safety - Threat Assessment team and Behavior Threat Assessment Policy."
Students Encouraged to Enter Anti-Substance Use Poster Contest
Hagerstown, MD (August 22, 2019) - The Washington Goes Purple organization is sponsoring a poster contest for students of Washington County. Students are encouraged to create posters following the theme of anti-substance use and must be submitted by September 20, 2019 to art teachers at school. Posters will be displayed at Valley Mall from September 23 to October 20 and will be voted on by mall visitors. The three top vote-getters in each of three categories will win gift cards: elementary, middle and high school.
Immunization Reminder for WCPS Students
Hagerstown, MD (August 15, 2019) - In order for a student to attend Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) for the 2019-2020 school year, the following required vaccinations must be completed and submitted to a child’s school health room:
* Two doses of MMR for a student who has turned five, including pre-kindergarten students who turn five during the school year
* Two doses of Varicella vaccine for entry into kindergarten and grades 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5
* One dose of Tdap vaccine for entry into grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12
