2019-2020 WCPS Teacher of the Year Finalists

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 15, 2019) – The five finalists for Washington County Public Schools’ (WCPS) 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year learned of their honor during visits by superintendent of schools Dr. Boyd Michael and other WCPS staff. One educator will be chosen to succeed 2018 Teacher of the Year, Jeanine Horst from Cascade Elementary School, and will be announced at the annual dinner and recognition at Fountain Head Country Club on April 24, 2019. The winner represents Washington County in the State Teacher of the Year program.

High School English Learner Students Explore Career Opportunities During Visit to Hagerstown Community College

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 12, 2019) – Sixty English learner students from Clear Spring, North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown, Washington County Technical and Williamsport high schools visited Hagerstown Community College (HCC) last week to learn more about higher education and career opportunities available to them after graduation. The showcase of career pathways for English learners is an annual partnership between Washington County Public Schools and HCC.

March Programs at William Brish Planetarium

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 11, 2019) – The William Brish Planetarium of Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) presents exciting and informative public programs in March. On Tuesday, March 12, Planetary Visions begins at 5:30 p.m. The interactive program is an exploration of the solar system and is geared to an audience of all ages, including elementary school students. The second program that night is Supervolcanoes, starting at 7:00, geared to a general audience.

WCPS Students Perform Well at National History Day District Competition

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 7, 2019) – Nearly 50 middle and high school students from Washington County Public Schools finished first or second in the National History Day District Competition held on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at the Washington County Free Library.  Each student earned the opportunity to advance to the Maryland History Day competition on May 11 at University of Maryland/Baltimore County.

Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten Enrollment Information

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 7, 2019) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is enrolling children for kindergarten and taking applications for pre-kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year. The first of a series of kindergarten registration dates is scheduled on Monday, March 11, 2019. Additional dates are April 29, May 13 and June 3. On those dates, staff members will be available at each Washington County elementary school to complete the registration process with parents and guardians of children who will be eligible for kindergarten next school year.

National History Day District Competition for WCPS Middle and High School Students

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 1, 2019) – Middle and high school students from Washington County Public Schools will participate in the National History Day District Competition on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Students have earned the opportunity to compete at the district level by advancing from the school level.

Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview Hosting Maple Sugar Festival on March 2

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 26, 2019) – The annual Maple Sugar Festival will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview. Families and visitors are welcome to enjoy maple sugaring demonstrations, live bluegrass music and indoor and outdoor children’s activities. A pancake breakfast sponsored by the Clear Spring FFA Alumni starts the day in the school’s dining hall. Breakfast hours are 8 – 11 a.m. and tickets are available for purchase from any Clear Spring FFA Alumni member or by calling 301.766.8138.

Clear Spring Elementary Receives Grant from A.C.&T

Hagerstown, MD (February 15, 2019) - Clear Spring Elementary School recently received a $500 Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance Program grant from A.C. & T in Big Pool. The funds will be directed to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) activities at school. A spokesman for Exxon Mobil says the company hopes the grant will encourage students to pursue future careers in math and science.
