State Releases PARCC Data
HAGERSTOWN, MD (December 8, 2015) – Initial results from the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments for elementary and middle school students in Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) and other public school systems in Maryland are being released today, according to a press release from the Maryland State Department of Education. Students in grades three through eight took PARCC assessments in the spring of 2015 in English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.
150th Anniversary Open House for Retirees
HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 19, 2015) – In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Washington County Public Schools (WCPS), all school system retirees are invited to a dessert reception on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the Center for Education Services, 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. Photography and video displays of the school system’s history will be exhibited and special remarks will be presented at 6 p.m. Attendees will receive a commemorative magazine and an exclusive anniversary lapel pin.
Initial PARCC Assessment Results Released
HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 5, 2015) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) and other public school systems across Maryland are seeing initial results of the first administration of the new Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments, according to a press release from the Maryland State Department of Education. Students took PARCC assessments in the fall of 2014 and spring of 2015 and the results from Algebra I, Algebra II and English 10 are being released today.
Years of Service Celebration on November 9
HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 2, 2015) – Washington County Public Schools will recognize employees at the annual Celebration of Service dinner and recognition on Monday, November 9, 2015, at 5 p.m. at Washington County Technical High School. The dinner honors WCPS employees who have reached five years of employment and years of service in five year increments. A total of 392 employees have been invited because they reached a landmark year of service this year. Three individuals will each be recognized for 45 years of service and another four for 40 years.
Smithsburg High Earns National Blue Ribbon School Honor
HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 29, 2015) – Smithsburg High School, named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School in December 2014, has earned the honor of 2015 National Blue Ribbon School, as announced by the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the news in a video message to each honored school this morning. Smithsburg High was one of six schools to earn state honors and each school was also named a National Blue Ribbon School today. Smithsburg is the only high school to receive 2015 state and national Blue Ribbon recognition.

Smithsburg High's Quinn Wandalowski Becomes Member of State Board of Education
Smithsburg High School junior Quinn Wandalowski’s one-year term as student member of the Maryland State Board of Education began on July 1. Quinn was one of two finalists voted by her peers at the State Student Association annual meeting and was selected for the position by Governor Larry Hogan.

Interactive School District Map Now Available
A partnership between Washington County Government and Washington County Public Schools has resulted in an interactive online tool that can be used to connect residential addresses with the school district in which the residences are located. The map can be found at https://maps.washco-md.net/schoollocator. Visitors can enter an address and determine the elementary, middle and high school district for that address.
