WCPS Updates Parents and Staff Regarding Flu and Coronavirus

Hagerstown, MD (February 26, 2020) - Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) communicated with parents and school system staff this evening regarding efforts to minimize effects of the flu and create awareness of the coronavirus that is causing concern around the world and now in the United States. The WCPS Public Information Office released a SMORE in a message to parents and staff.

Clear Spring High Named Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School; Celebration on March 6

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 25, 2020) – Clear Spring High School will celebrate a national Special Olympics honor during a program on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 2 p.m. Clear Spring has been named a Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School, becoming a member of Maryland’s inaugural class of honored schools. A Unified Champion School is recognized for its inclusive school climate and for displaying a sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff.

Boonsboro High Returning to Physics Olympics Saturday

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 21, 2020) – Students from Boonsboro High School will take their familiar places in the Central Maryland Physics Olympics on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Liberty High School in Carroll County. Boonsboro is the only school representing Washington County at the event and has participated in the competition for more than 20 consecutive years. A team from Boonsboro won top honors in the 2019 competition and earned a prize of $1,000 for the school. Last year’s competition featured over 300 students from more than 25 schools.

Bus Driver Cynthia Lyons Named ESP of the Year

Hagerstown, MD (February 13, 2020) - Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) bus driver Cynthia Lyons was named ESP of the Year at the first Educational Support Personnel Awards dinner at the Elks Lodge in Hagerstown last night. Cynthia was chosen from a group of finalists that also included Terry Brown, head custodian at Fountain Rock Elementary School; Jennifer Duggan, a pre-kindergarten paraprofessional at Emma K.

Special Permission Applications Accepted from February 1 Through May 1

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 31, 2020) - Special Permission Applications for the 2020-2021 school year will be accepted by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) from February 1 through May 1, 2020. Under Board of Education Regulation JC-R, a student may be approved to attend a school outside his or her attendance area if the request meets specific criteria and there is available student capacity at the requested school.

Third Round of Children In Need Clothing Drive: February 3 - 14

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 31, 2020) – The third round of the 13th annual clothing drive conducted by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) to benefit Children In Need begins Monday, February 3, 2020 and continues through Friday, February 14. Students, parents, WCPS staff and the community are encouraged to donate gently used clothing that Children In Need distributes to children eligible for the Free and Reduced Meals program. Toiletries, books and school supplies are also accepted.

North High to Host All-County Band Concert on February 1

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 27, 2020) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) presents the 2020 All-County Band concert on Saturday, February 1 at 7 p.m. at North Hagerstown High School. The Middle School Concert Band will be conducted by Shannon Shaker, Director of Bands at Frostburg State University and the High School Concert Band will be conducted by Keith Hodgson, Director of Bands at University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

WCPS Employees to be Recognized at 2020 Celebration of Service

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 17, 2020) – The 2020 Celebration of Service recognizes employees of Washington County Public Schools (WCPS). The annual event is scheduled on Thursday, January 23 at Washington County Technical High School. The reception honors WCPS employees who have reached five years of employment and years of service in five-year increments. The number of invited employees totals 567, including Jerri McNew and Becky Vantz from Hickory Elementary School and Judy Hamsher from the Human Resources Department, who will be recognized for 45 years of service.

Nominations Sought to Recognize Excellence in Special Education Staff

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 15, 2020) – The Washington County Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee (SECAC) is seeking nominations of special education staff members in order recognize excellence in special education for school year 2019-2020. Nominations can be made in five categories: Special Education Teacher (including hearing and vision teachers), Special Education Paraprofessional, Case Manager, Service Provider or Specialist and Friend of Special Education.
