BOE Recognizes 2019 Maryland Seal of Biliteracy Recipients

HAGERSTOWN, MD (May 21, 2019) – The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) recognized a group of 44 seniors from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) who had earned the 2019 Maryland Seal of Biliteracy. A dessert reception for the students and their guests preceded the recognition at tonight’s BOE business meeting. The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy is a state award that recognizes a student’s high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages other than English. It is awarded to eligible high school seniors who have earned a minimum score of 4 on Advanced Placement World Language and Culture exams, 6 on International Baccalaureate World Language exam or 6 on Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency and have passed the English 10 Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program.
Paula Moore, Supervisor of ESOL and World Languages, says, “I am proud that WCPS values language learning, affirms the language and culture of native and heritage speakers and values our students’ diversity. The Maryland Seal of Biliteracy can provide employers and colleges with a way of identifying students who have critical skills needed in our global society.” Ms. Moore added that it is the largest and most diverse group of students earning the award, with Chinese, French, German and Spanish being recognized.
