District National History Day Winners

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 11, 2020) – Students from Washington County Public Schools earned an opportunity to participate in the Maryland National History Day Competition in May during today’s district competition for middle and high school students at the Washington County Free Library. Judging was done at the Senior level (high school) and the Junior level (middle school) in individual and group categories. The following students and teams earned advancement to the state competition:

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Enrollments Being Accepted for 2020-2021

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 11, 2020) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is enrolling children for kindergarten and taking applications for pre-kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year. The first of a series of kindergarten registration dates is scheduled on Monday, March 16, 2020. Additional dates are April 21, May 13 and June 4. On those dates, from 8:30 a.m.

BISFA Wind Band Invited to Perform at Maryland Music Educators Association's Annual Conference

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 4, 2020) – The Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Wind Band has been invited to perform at the Maryland Music Educators Association’s (MMEA) Annual Conference on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at the Baltimore Convention Center. The hour-long performance is scheduled to begin at 12:50 p.m. in room 310. The group was invited based on the ensemble’s exemplary performance at the Maryland Band Directors Association State Band Festival in April 2019.

Disability Awareness Art Contest Awards Reception on March 9

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 2, 2020) – An awards reception for the Tri-State Civitan Middle School Disability Awareness Art Contest will be held on Monday, March 9, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Washington County Public Schools’ Center for Education Services, 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. Entries based on the theme, “There is Ability in Every Disability,” were submitted by general education and life skills students from Boonsboro, Clear Spring, E. Russell Hicks, Hancock, Northern, Smithsburg and Western Heights middle schools.

WCPS Updates Parents and Staff Regarding Flu and Coronavirus

Hagerstown, MD (February 26, 2020) - Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) communicated with parents and school system staff this evening regarding efforts to minimize effects of the flu and create awareness of the coronavirus that is causing concern around the world and now in the United States. The WCPS Public Information Office released a SMORE in a message to parents and staff.

Clear Spring High Named Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School; Celebration on March 6

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 25, 2020) – Clear Spring High School will celebrate a national Special Olympics honor during a program on Friday, March 6, 2020 at 2 p.m. Clear Spring has been named a Special Olympics National Banner Unified Champion School, becoming a member of Maryland’s inaugural class of honored schools. A Unified Champion School is recognized for its inclusive school climate and for displaying a sense of collaboration, engagement and respect for all members of the student body and staff.

Boonsboro High Returning to Physics Olympics Saturday

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 21, 2020) – Students from Boonsboro High School will take their familiar places in the Central Maryland Physics Olympics on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at Liberty High School in Carroll County. Boonsboro is the only school representing Washington County at the event and has participated in the competition for more than 20 consecutive years. A team from Boonsboro won top honors in the 2019 competition and earned a prize of $1,000 for the school. Last year’s competition featured over 300 students from more than 25 schools.

Bus Driver Cynthia Lyons Named ESP of the Year

Hagerstown, MD (February 13, 2020) - Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) bus driver Cynthia Lyons was named ESP of the Year at the first Educational Support Personnel Awards dinner at the Elks Lodge in Hagerstown last night. Cynthia was chosen from a group of finalists that also included Terry Brown, head custodian at Fountain Rock Elementary School; Jennifer Duggan, a pre-kindergarten paraprofessional at Emma K.

Special Permission Applications Accepted from February 1 Through May 1

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 31, 2020) - Special Permission Applications for the 2020-2021 school year will be accepted by Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) from February 1 through May 1, 2020. Under Board of Education Regulation JC-R, a student may be approved to attend a school outside his or her attendance area if the request meets specific criteria and there is available student capacity at the requested school.
