Bus Driver Cynthia Lyons Named ESP of the Year

Posted February 13, 2020

Hagerstown, MD (February 13, 2020) - Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) bus driver Cynthia Lyons was named ESP of the Year at the first Educational Support Personnel Awards dinner at the Elks Lodge in Hagerstown last night. Cynthia was chosen from a group of finalists that also included Terry Brown, head custodian at Fountain Rock Elementary School; Jennifer Duggan, a pre-kindergarten paraprofessional at Emma K. Doub Elementary School; Marsha McNeil, satellite food manager at Clear Spring Middle School; and Marleen Moore, registrar and counseling secretary at Boonsboro Middle School.

Ms. Lyons has been driving for WCPS for three years. Out of concern for the safety of children boarding and disembarking from her bus, she started a countywide ribbon campaign to raise bus safety awareness. Since then, Cyndi has sold ribbons (at cost) in all 50 states and Canada. She also keeps a supply of extra backpacks, lunch boxes, gloves and hats on the bus for students in need or who have lost items. In her free time, Cyndi enjoys crafting, photography and participating with her daughter at horse shows, which they use to raise funds for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
