Family Literacy Night at Western Heights Middle on November 12

HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 22, 2015) – Western Heights Middle School is inviting its students and families to a family literacy night, “Cozy Up With a Good Book,” on Thursday, November 12, 2015 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Those attending will be served a spaghetti dinner before groups break up into “cozy corners” to read books and learn about reading strategies. The evening will also include raffles for complete Thanksgiving meals and themed baskets. At the end of the event, each child and adult will have the opportunity to choose a book to take home.

BISFA to Welcome Classical Guitarist from Spain

HAGERSTOWN, MD (October 12, 2015) – Barbara Ingram School for the Arts welcomes classical guitarist Marco Socias from Malaga, Spain, on Friday, October 23, 2015. Socias will perform and talk with students at 3 p.m., a day before he presents a concert for the John E. Marlow Guitar Series, the organization that made his visit possible, in Bethesda, Maryland.

Socias has released eight albums for labels such as Opera Tres, EMI and Harmonia Mundi, and has won prizes in major international competitions while performing in 40 countries as a soloist and with orchestra. 

Smithsburg High Earns National Blue Ribbon School Honor

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 29, 2015) – Smithsburg High School, named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School in December 2014, has earned the honor of 2015 National Blue Ribbon School, as announced by the U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the news in a video message to each honored school this morning. Smithsburg High was one of six schools to earn state honors and each school was also named a National Blue Ribbon School today. Smithsburg is the only high school to receive 2015 state and national Blue Ribbon recognition.

39th Annual Showcase of Marching Bands on October 6 at South High

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 25, 2015) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) presents the 39th Annual Showcase of Marching Bands on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 7 p.m. at South Hagerstown High School. The Smithsburg High School “Leopard” Band will serve as the host band and will be joined by the marching bands from Boonsboro, Clear Spring, North Hagerstown, South Hagerstown and Williamsport high schools.

9th Annual WCPS Clothing Drive for Children In Need Begins September 14

Hagerstown, MD (September 10, 2015) - The 9th Annual Clothing Drive by Washington County Public Schools for Children In Need begins September 14 and runs through September 25, 2015. Students, parents, staff and the community are encouraged to donate gently used clothing that Children In Need distributes to children eligible for the Free and Reduced Meals program. Toiletries, books and school supplies are also accepted. The schools participating in the September 2015 collection are:

Tech High's Sally Irwin is State Teacher of the Year Finalist

HAGERSTOWN, MD (September 2, 2015) – Sally Irwin, Project Lead the Way biomedical science teacher at Washington County Technical High School and 2015-2016 Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Teacher of the Year, has been announced as one of seven finalists for Maryland State Teacher of the Year 2015-2016. The other finalists are from Allegany, Anne Arundel, Frederick, Howard and Queen Anne’s counties and Baltimore City.

Deadline for Required Immunizations is September 4

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 24, 2015) – The deadline to complete vaccinations required by the Maryland State Department of Education is Friday, September 4, 2015. A reminder from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is especially important for kindergarten and 7th grade students, whose requirements changed last year. Any child with incomplete vaccination records will not be allowed to return to school after the Labor Day weekend, until proof of all immunizations is submitted to the child’s school.

Summer Reminder about Required Immunizations

HAGERSTOWN, MD (July 15, 2015) – Washington County Public Schools issues another reminder to parents of students entering kindergarten and 7th grade in the 2015-2016 school year, that state vaccination requirements have changed. Kindergarten students must have two doses of Varicella for chickenpox and 7th grade students must have a single dose each of the Tdap vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis and the meningococcal vaccine for MCV.
