Step 2: What happens at the referral meeting?

At the first meeting, you and school personnel will share concerns about your child's progress. Remember, you are a very important member of the IEP team!

IEP Team Members

  • Parents
  • Regular education teacher
  • Special education teacher or service provider
  • Public agency representative
  • Others, at parent or agency discretion
  • Student, when appropriate
  • Transitioning representative, when appropriate
  • Nonpublic school representative, when appropriate

School staff will review information about your child's school program and progress. The evaluation process will be explained and assessment planned, as appropriate.

  • Developmental information
  • Medical history
  • Recent changes in your child's life
  • Daily living skills
  • Activities your child likes
  • Problems you think your child has
  • What helps your child be successful in school
  • Your future plans (long-term and short-term goals) for your child
