Step 1: How can my child be referred?

If you have a concern about your infants or toddler's development, feel free to call the Early Intervention Program at 301-766-8217. A service coordinator will help you arrange a multidisciplinary evaluation and assessment for your child in order to determine program eligibility.

If you think your child is having problems learning in school or is not developing skills other children have mastered … contact your local school principal and request a meeting with the Special Education team (otherwise known as the IEP – Individualized Education Program – team).

Teachers, doctors or anyone concerned about your child may also make a referral. An IEP team meeting will be held to begin the identification process. You will receive an invitation to the meeting. The invitation to special education meetings will include:

  • The purpose, time, and location of the meeting
  • A list of other persons invited; and
  • The name of the person to contact if you would like another meeting time.
  • You may have other people come to the meeting with you if you would like.

If you child is not yet in school

  • For children 34 months to entering Kindergarten, contact 301-766-8509
  • For children birth through 33 months, contact 301-766-8217
