PRESS RELEASE: Building Incident at Bester Elementary

Posted August 30, 2022

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 30, 2022) - At approximately 11:00am, Bester Elementary School evacuated in response to an activated fire alarm. Washington County Public Schools (WCPS), Hagerstown Fire Department, and Hagerstown Police Department personnel responded swiftly and all students were taken to a safe area outside the school and no injuries were reported.

At the time of this message, WCPS can confirm that a small fire was found in a bathroom on the second floor of the building and was extinguished without further incident. The building’s sprinkler system activated. WCPS worked in conjunction with the Hagerstown Fire Department, and the Fire Marshal to clear the building and allow students and staff to return pending an early dismissal.

After assessing building conditions, administrators, maintenance staff, and the fire marshal determined that an early dismissal was necessary because of water damage to classrooms. WCPS provided bus transportation to regular bus riders and followed reunification plans to ensure a safe dismissal of car riders and walkers. Food and Nutrition Services staff provided bagged meals to students.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation and families will be contacted regarding a decision on classes tomorrow.

The well-being of our students, and staff is our top priority. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact WCPS Public Information at 301-766-2809.
