BOE Seeking Diversity Committee Members; Applications Accepted Through November 28

HAGERSTOWN, MD (November 4, 2016) – The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) is beginning the process of finding members for the newly created ad hoc Committee On Diversity. The BOE approved the establishment of the committee at its October 18, 2016 business meeting. The committee’s charge is to propose new initiatives or expand existing programs that promote respect for all cultures and diversity throughout Washington County. The committee’s work can include but will not be limited to identifying effective practices to enhance educational and employment opportunities, recruit, retain, develop and promote a diverse and inclusive workforce and establish a more inclusive community in ways such as enhancing arts and cultural opportunities, affordable quality housing options and improved transportation options.

The committee will be comprised of 15 members and will also include Laura Francisco, executive director of human resources, and Dr. Peggy Pugh, associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction as ex-officio members. The BOE is hoping to attract members who have knowledge of and experience with the issue under consideration, including current members of the Diversity Task Force. Other possible sources for committee members include the faith community, non-profit agencies, public education, business leaders, elected officials and individuals from the greater Washington County community.

The committee will provide an interim report to the BOE in June 2017 and a final report in December 2017.
