Congratulations are in order for Williamsport High School for being named a 2011 Maryland Green School by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE). This significant accomplishment represents a whole school commitment to environmental literacy and sustainability for staff, students and the community. As Baba Dioum, a Senegalese ecologist puts it, “In the end we will conserve only what we love. We love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” 

Williamsport has succeeded in using this holistic, integrated approach to incorporate local environmental issue investigation and professional development with environmental best management practices and community stewardship. Williamsport High School has acted to empower youth to practically apply knowledge at school, home and in their communities to reduce pollution, decrease waste, increase habitat, limit carbon emissions, and create healthy environmental literacy goals and mandates established through the Governor’s Partnership for Children in Nature, and the new environmental literacy requirements for the Maryland State Department of Education.   

Williamsport High School is to be commended for demonstrating a significant commitment to restore, enhance, and protect Maryland’s natural environment.  Thank you to all the teachers who assisted with the application process!

Green School Certification and Recertification

In June 2012, Williamsport received Green School designation based on a concerted effort to implement and document environmentally-friendly programs and instruction.  The award was presented by the Maryland Association of Outdoor and Environmental Educators.  The designation is valid for four years from September 2011 through June 2015.

Williamsport High School is working toward recertification for another four years by continuing to provide instruction in environmental issues and opportunities to improve the environment.
