School-Based Immunization Clinics Available for 6th Graders in May

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 26, 2016) – Students entering 7th grade in the 2016-2017 school year who have not completed their required immunizations have an opportunity to receive the vaccines during free, school-based clinics on May 24 and 25. A consent form must be submitted to the school health office prior to any child receiving vaccines at the clinics and it is requested that consent forms be completed and submitted by May 3. A form and related information about the vaccines are being sent home again this week with each 6th grade student.

Fairview Fishing Rodeo on April 23

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 13, 2016) – Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview welcomes students and their families to the annual Fairview Fishing Rodeo on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from 8 a.m. to noon. Prizes will be awarded for the longest trout caught to the top three finishers in each of two age groups: up to nine years old and ten through 15 years old. Admission and activities for the day are free.

WCPS/WCTA Negotiating Session Postponed

Hagerstown, MD (April 8, 2016) - A negotiating session between representatives of Washington County Public Schools and the Washington County Teachers Association scheduled on April 11, 2016, has been postponed. The updated schedule of negotiating sessions is now Thursday, April 21 at 5 p.m. and Thursday, May 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Center for Education Services, 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. The meetings are open to the public. 

BOE Seeking Comments on Proposed Policy Changes

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 5, 2016) – The Washington County Board of Education (BOE) today approved the first reading of changes to two policies and is now seeking public comments on the proposed changes. The BOE’s Policy Committee is inviting comments on Policy DIFA, entitled “Fraud Reporting and Follow-Up” and Policy KD, “Opportunity for Public Comment at Board Business Meetings, Town Meetings, and Public Hearings and the Procedures Governing Such Proceedings.”  The policies are posted at BoardDocs:

First Student Honors Recital at Washington County Museum on April 10

HAGERSTOWN, MD (April 4, 2016) – The inaugural Student Honors Recital will be held Bowman Recital Hall of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 5 p.m. The museum is located at Hagerstown City Park. The event is jointly sponsored by the Office of Visual and Performing Arts of Washington County Public Schools and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. The public is invited and there is no admission charge.

WCPS Set to Kick Off Apprenticeship Maryland

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 31, 2016) – Local and state business leaders and elected officials have been invited to a kickoff reception for the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) Apprenticeship Maryland program. The event will be held on Thursday, April 7, 2016 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Center for Education Services, 10435 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown. WCPS has been selected with Frederick County Public Schools as the two school systems in Maryland to pilot the program.

Children In Need Clothing Drive in Schools

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 29, 2016) – The latest clothing drive for Children In Need will be conducted by Washington County Public Schools  from April 4 - 15, 2016. Students, parents, staff and the community are encouraged to donate gently used clothing that Children In Need distributes to children eligible for the Free and Reduced Meals program. Finalists for 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year Announced

HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 18, 2016) – Three elementary school teachers and three high school teachers have been selected as finalists in the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year program. The educator chosen to succeed Teacher of the Year Sally Irwin of Washington County Technical High School will be announced at the annual dinner and recognition at Fountain Head Country Club on April 20, 2016. The winner represents Washington County in the State Teacher of the Year program.
