HAGERSTOWN, MD (March 15, 2017) – For the second consecutive year, 13 students from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) are being recognized in the National Carson Scholars program. For 2017, three students are honored for the first time and the remaining ten students are being recognized for maintaining their Carson Scholar status through excellent performance in the classroom and commitment to their communities. The national program annually recognizes students from grades four through 11 for outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities. The Carson Scholars Fund list of new 2017 honorees includes three fifth grade students: Sarah Frushour at Pleasant Valley Elementary, Emma Waite at Cascade Elementary and Suzanne Mitchell at Williamsport Elementary. The newly recognized students are among a group of 483 students nationally being recognized for the first time. Each first time award winner receives a $1,000 scholarship.

WCPS students whose Carson Scholar status was renewed were Gabriel Juedemann, Sabrina Manganaro and Adam Metz from Boonsboro High, Ana Mooney at Northern Middle, Nicholas Bono and Grace Kittel from Smithsburg Middle, Lindsey Draheim and Abigail Kittel at Smithsburg High, Norah Keller at Western Heights Middle and Kaylee Adelsberger from Williamsport High. The students will be honored at the 21st Annual Awards Ceremony on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Martins West in Baltimore. The Carson Scholars Fund was founded by Dr. Ben Carson and his wife Candy in 1994 to promote academic excellence and social consciousness in students, and to cultivate future leaders.
