Making the All-County roster is a pre-season goal of many student-athletes in high school.

It is an honor they will carry with them throughout the rest of the lives. College coaches also take notice as they search for talent to recruit.

After the conclusion of each season, coaches from around Washington County fill out a ballot with names of players who they believe were the best in their respective sport that season. The local media also makes All-County selections which are revealed over the course of a week after the season concludes.

By the numbers:

  • In the first school year under athletic director Ryan Myers, the South Hagerstown High School athletic department saw a total of 69 All-County selections. The largest group to receive All-County honors was the fall season when South High received 29 selections.

  • Of the 16 varsity sports programs that recognize All-County athletes at South High, football finished with the most selections with 12.

  • The winter season saw ten less than the fall - 19. The spring season edged out the winter for second highest on the year with 21.

  • Two Rebel coaches received Herald-Mail Coach of the Year honors this year - football coach Toby Peer in the fall and tennis coach Tyler Fairley in the spring.

Without a doubt, the 2016-2017 school year was another very strong year for South High athletics.
