School Safety Message for WCPS Learning Community

Posted January 25, 2024

To our WCPS learning community:

I need to inform you about a concerning incident that happened in one of our schools today. I am sharing this with our greater school community in the interest of providing accurate information and with the hope of preventing a similar incident in the future.

A loaded handgun was found in a student’s backpack at North Hagerstown High School during a private search. The search was conducted because administrators received reports about alleged unlawful activity. I am thankful to report that all students and staff were safe while this matter was addressed. The gun was secured by police and the student was removed from the school without incident.

It is critical that we work collectively as a community to keep our schools safe. Our students, staff, families, and community members must quickly report any potential dangers to the school and/or local law enforcement. Please assure your children they are doing the right thing by speaking up for school safety.

For your information, I have included the letter that was shared with North Hagerstown High School families

Washington County Public Schools is committed to promoting the safety and well-being of our students and school communities. We appreciate your partnership in keeping our schools safe and secure.

Sincerely,

Dr. David T. Sovine, Superintendent of Schools
