The 2021 interscholastic spring athletics season is underway in Washington County Public Schools (WCPS)! The following information pertains to current guidelines established by the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA). These details and future sports seasons are subject to change at the direction of MDH, MPSSAA, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), or due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Look for a future update about band and chorus performances as well as spring events and celebrations.

Student athletes must meet all academic eligibility guidelines to participate in athletic competitions. WCPS’ top priority is educating our students, and we believe learning is most effective in the classroom. Therefore, student athletes must attend school in person, or be on a waiting list to attend school in person, to participate and compete in athletics. If an athlete is confirmed to attend school in person and is not physically present in school, he/she may not participate in sports that day.

Athletes and coaching staff are required to follow all safety rules and expectations. Students will wear a mask covering the mouth and nose when they are not in competition. Students participating in indoor sports will wear a mask at all times.

Student athletes will be permitted to use school locker rooms in small groups at the end of the school day to prepare for practice. Locker rooms will be closed once practice begins, and students should have all of their belongings with them.

WCPS spring student athletes will participate in an in-county competitive schedule. This is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Washington County from other communities.

Spring sports schedules will be posted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19 at: http://www.washingtoncountycmc.org.

WCPS is fortunate to provide students the opportunity to participate and compete in a full season of spring sports. It is incredibly important that we continue to keep our schools open and our athletes in play. To maximize these opportunities and promote our community’s health, WCPS will continue to follow MDH guidance and orders for sporting events.

Outdoor and indoor games at WCPS facilities are limited to 50% capacity as long as spectators are able to keep six feet of distance between themselves and anyone outside of their household.

All student athletes will be provided up to two spectator tickets to each home game and each away game for stadium-style sports, including indoor bocce, lacrosse, and track and field. Separate tickets will be issued for junior varsity and varsity competitions. Lacrosse games will be live-streamed from school social media platforms.

There is no charge for spectator tickets. During the COVID-19 pandemic, WCPS Gold Cards for senior citizens, State athletic passes, and employee IDs cannot be honored as a ticket.

For the WCPS spring sports season to be healthy, safe, and successful, fans and spectators must abide by the following guidelines and expectations:

• Face coverings are required to be worn over the mouth and nose at all times for both indoor and outdoor events.
• All spectators are required to stay in designated seating areas. Fans may want to consider bringing their own folding chairs as some bleacher seating will not be available.
• Spectators from different households must maintain physical distancing of six feet from others and not sit in groups.
• Spectators cannot leave and return to the event area during the competition.
• As is the case with all school events, spectators and fans are expected to demonstrate proper conduct and positive sportsmanship.
