Posted February 19, 2019

HAGERSTOWN, MD (February 19, 2019) – Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) will host the MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Washington County Technical High School. The first round begins at 9 a.m. and the awards ceremony is scheduled at approximately 12:30 p.m. Students from Washington and Allegany counties will compete. WCPS teams will represent Boonsboro, E. Russell Hicks, Smithsburg, Springfield and Western Heights middle schools. The participating schools have a MATHCOUNTS club and team coaches have selected the students who are competing.

The competition consists of three rounds that contribute to the official scoring. The Sprint Round is first, featuring individual competition without calculators, followed by the Target Round, another individual competition, but with calculators permitted. Calculators are also permitted during the Team Round when team members collaborate. A Countdown Round will complete the event, focusing on speed and accuracy, but not factoring into the final scoring.

The winners advance to state competition in March.
