Deadline for Required Immunizations is September 4

Posted August 24, 2015

HAGERSTOWN, MD (August 24, 2015) – The deadline to complete vaccinations required by the Maryland State Department of Education is Friday, September 4, 2015. A reminder from Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) is especially important for kindergarten and 7th grade students, whose requirements changed last year. Any child with incomplete vaccination records will not be allowed to return to school after the Labor Day weekend, until proof of all immunizations is submitted to the child’s school.

Kindergarten students are required to have two doses of Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine. 7th grade students are required to have a single of Tetanus, diphtheria, Pertussis (specifically the Tdap vaccine) and a single of Meningococcal vaccine (MCV). Parents and guardians are required to provide proof of the updated vaccinations, regardless of the previous vaccination records provided to the child’s school health room prior to the start of the 2015-2016 school year.

Meritus Health Center and WCPS recommend that required vaccinations and/or proof of vaccinations be obtained from a child’s primary care provider. If students do not have health insurance or insurance does not cover the cost of the vaccines, they may be obtained from the Washington County Health Department. The vaccines are also offered at CVS Minute Clinic, East Wilson Boulevard and Walmart Pharmacy, Garland Groh Boulevard, both in Hagerstown.

For additional information and answers to questions about vaccination requirements, parents and guardians are encouraged to contact the health room at their child’s school, or call 301-766-8795 or 301-766-8723.
