Boonsboro High's We the People Team Wins State Championship

Posted January 9, 2018

HAGERSTOWN, MD (January 9, 2018) – The We the People team from Boonsboro High School earned the state championship on January 4, 2018, in competition with two schools from Baltimore and Charles counties. Boonsboro will participate in the national We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution competition in Leesburg, Virginia from April 27 – May 1, 2018.

In the simulated congressional hearing, students “testify” before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.

The primary goal of We the People is to promote civic competence and responsibility among students. The program helps students understand the history and principles of the Constitution and to discover the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.  The course is based on a six-unit curriculum that takes students from historical principles to the role of the citizen.

Team members and supporters have begun an effort to raise $25,000 in order to attend the national competition. Donations are being accepted at BHS We the People, Boonsboro High School, 10 Campus Avenue, Boonsboro, MD 21713. In addition, a portion of proceeds from sales at Panera Bread of Hagerstown from 6 – 9 p.m. on Monday, February 5 will be contributed to the team.
